I recently turned 58 years old. My birthday gift was a diagnosis of Type-2 Diabetes. It was not a welcome diagnosis, to say the least. Type-2 Diabetes not only puts you at risk for many complications but it is also suspected to double the possibility of getting Alzheimer’s Disease.
As much as I did not want to have Diabetes, I also did not want to be put on medicine for the rest of my life. Thankfully, my new doctor understood this completely and so she gave me 3 months to try to reverse it through diet and exercise.
I am very happy to say that I was indeed able to reverse my Type-2 Diabetes in 3 months. I also lost 30 pounds (so far) in the process. This is not an easy feat at my age. I would love to help others with this diagnosis to be able to do the same if they also would like to avoid medicine.
Here are the rules I was given by my doctor:
Check glucose every morning before eating. Keep between 120-150 and send the doctor two weeks of readings every two weeks.
No food 4 hours before bed.
Keep a food diary (I didn’t do this).
Keto bread is ok but should be eaten only for lunch as dinner should not include this type of carb.
Proteins plus veggie only for dinner.
Only one serving of berries per day (no blueberries, too much sugar).
No other fruits.
These are OK complex carbs: chickpeas (hummus), lentils, black beans, oatmeal (preferably Overnight oats).
No flour. Switch to chickpea pasta.
Also, avoid pork and beef for cholesterol; eat chicken and fish.
I have used this Blood Glucose Monitor each morning to check my fasting glucose and note my numbers. I had committed to intermittent fasting even before the diagnosis. My eating window is 8 hours per day.
I have also begun walking for 45 minutes at least 3 nights per week. It’s still quite hot here but I am truly looking forward to walking once the weather cools off. I know I will love it!
One of my immediate concerns about the diagnosis was the fact that I had a Disney trip coming up very soon. Thankfully, I was able to manage it successfully. I will be sharing more about this soon.
I am going to be starting a series on this Blog as I continue my journey to be in the normal range during my December 2022 visit. I have begun deep-diving into a lot of information and research and I would like to share that with others. I will also be sharing my meal plans, tips and some other ways I prepare for success each day.
My A1c level has fallen from 6.8 to 5.7 during these 3 months. This puts me in the pre-diabetes range. However, normal range is 5.6 or below so I am sure I can meet this goal and become healthier in the process.
Will you join me on this journey? I would love to walk this path with you.
